About

Alexandra Sesenton prides herself on being a multi-genre musician. Her career highlights include performances in opera, blues collectives, traditional folk ensembles, and recital (with a concentration in Balkan and Spanish repertoire). She  completed her master’s studies at the Royal Academy of Music where she received a Master of Music degree with distinction.

Alex currently serves as the Education Programs Intern for Yo-Yo Ma's Silkroad Ensemble where she supports the education outreach division with organizing details for Silkroad programs at educational institutions and universities, assisting with curriculum and content development, and tracking key metrics and data as they pertain to Silkroad's education programs.

Alex is a keen advocate for cultural exchange through the arts. She initially honed in on this interest in 2016 when she was awarded a Fulbright Study/Research grant which she carried out in Belgrade, Serbia. She spent her grant year serving as the artistic director for The Performing Arts Factory, a music school in central Belgrade training children ages 6-17 in the musical and dramatic arts. While in Belgrade, she also made frequent appearances at the Belgrade National Theater performing as a young artist. As an ambassador of the United States, she strived to create bonds between the people of Serbia and the U.S through music and English teaching initiatives.

Alex has participated in a number of cultural exchange projects including singing with all female, Serbian acapella group, ROSA and participating in multiple concert series through Royal Academy Voices showcasing the music of Spain and Italy. Her most recent foray into cultural and anthropological studies is a podcast entitled Roots: A Music Podcast consisting of episodes that explore the folk and roots music of different cultures from around the globe. The podcast was created as a way of bringing cross-cultural education directly into the homes and ears of both those who have a desire to expand their understanding of global cultures as well as those who may hold misconceptions about certain groups of people outside his or her realm of understanding.

As a musician, Alex is a firm believer in genre hopping. Although she comes from a classical background, she identifies as a genre fluid musician and as such performs a variety of different genres with a specific affinity towards blues, bluegrass, folk, and roots music. In addition to singing, she also plays  guitar, piano, banjo, and cello. She strives to create musical programs that push the boundaries of genre and the cultural understanding surrounding music performance practices.

Alex's classical background spans nearly ten years and four different countries. She made her operatic debut in 2016 as The Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro at the Festival of the Aegean on the island of Syros, Greece. In addition to her operatic performance at the festival, she also appeared as a soloist with Choeur D’Enfants d’ile-de-France in a performance recognizing the victims of the 2016 bombing in Nice, France. During the summer of 2018, Ms.Sesenton participated as a young artist with the Miami Music Festival performing the role of Helena in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Training programs she has participated in include Boston University Tanglewood Institute (Lenox, Massachusetts), OperaWorks (Los Angeles), and La Lingua Della Lirica (Novafeltria, Italy). She completed her bachelor’s degree at Mannes College the New School for Music where she was awarded the Lotte-Pulvemacher-Egers Humanities award for outstanding performance in music and the humanities. She also holds an Advanced Music Diploma from Carnegie Mellon University with concentrations in vocal pedagogy and sound recording. She recently reentered the recording studio this past summer to provide audio content for an Amazon Alexa commercial which aired in August of 2020.

In addition to music, Ms.Sesenton is a yogi who enjoys running, surfing, and reading on the beach. She also loves coffee.
